Recommended by the Centers for Disease Control, products containing DEET can be used safely and effectively. There are concerns that DEET can pose health risks when not used according to label instructions according to Dr. Daniel Sudakin, a toxicologist at Oregon State University. Adverse reactions to insect repellents containing DEET occur when they are overused or misused. Tips for using products containing DEET include, putting it on exposed skin only, don't apply products containing DEET on cuts, wounds, or irritated skin, or use underneath clothing.
